Primeval Danube (Melk): The primeval Danube meandered freely, constantly changing its course, through today’s Weinviertel into the shallow sea of the Vienna Basin. In doing so it piled up several layers of gravel terraces (dry cold periods), into which it later cut again (increased water flow in warmer phases).
